The AEO guide for cleaning companies
How to make your cleaning company the source AI answer engines quote when customers ask about cleaning services, prices and providers in your area.
Short answer: To win in answer engines, list the real questions your customers ask, answer each one directly in the first two or three sentences of a relevant page, support the answers with specifics (prices or ranges, checklists, areas, policies), add matching FAQ and Service structured data, keep your business facts identical everywhere, and check regularly how Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity answer those questions.
What answer engines are
Answer engines reply with an answer instead of a list of links: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and voice assistants like Siri and Alexa. They pull from pages they can crawl and trust, then summarize.
Step 1: Collect the real questions
Good sources:
- Questions your office staff hear on the phone every week
- Google's "People also ask" boxes for your services
- Autocomplete suggestions ("how much does a deep clean…")
- Questions in your reviews and Google Business Profile Q&A
- What ChatGPT or Perplexity suggest as follow-up questions
Group them: pricing, what's included, process and preparation, trust and policies, areas and availability.
Step 2: Write answer-first
Every answer follows the same pattern:
- Direct answer in 1–3 sentences
- Why it matters or what it depends on
- Detail: checklists, examples, tables
- Next step: link to book or get a quote
Example: "Do your cleaners bring supplies?" → "Yes. Our teams bring all cleaning products and equipment, including vacuums and microfiber cloths. If you prefer we use your own products, just tell us when you book."
Step 3: Put answers where engines expect them
| Question type | Best location |
|---|---|
| Price | Service pages + a pricing explainer page |
| What's included | Service page checklist |
| Areas served | Service-area section + area pages + GBP |
| Policies, insurance, supplies | FAQ page + relevant service pages |
| Comparisons (standard vs. deep) | Dedicated article or service page section |
Step 4: Add structured data
- FAQPage markup only where the questions and answers are visible on the page
- Service markup on service pages
- LocalBusiness (or HouseCleaningService) with consistent name, phone, areas and hours
- Organization with sameAs links to your real profiles
Step 5: Keep facts consistent
If your website says you serve 12 cities and your Google profile lists 8, AI tools may repeat either. Align your website, Google Business Profile, Bing, Apple and directories.
Step 6: Track and improve
Each month, ask your 10–20 most important questions in Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Record whether you're cited, what's said, and which sources are used. Improve the pages that should be winning.
Common mistakes
- Answers hidden behind tabs, images or PDFs
- "Contact us for pricing" with no context at all
- Copying the same FAQ onto every page
- Marking up questions that aren't on the page
